初次見面,千萬別問What's your name?》這4句英文一說出口,馬上讓你變冷場王

你很容易在講英文的場合裡變成冷場王嗎?好幾次聽學生談起他們在英文裡受到挫折,其中一個傳神的描述是:「不知道為什麼,每次輪我說話,氣氛就開始凝重起來....」

我們來看看,怎麼解決職場英文「冷場王」的尷尬!

Jason代表公司參加雞尾酒會,迎面走來一位白人拿著一杯酒,邊揮手邊迎面走來,「完蛋了,我想不起來他到底叫什麼名字!」

情境一:初次見面

(NG)What's your name?
(OK)I'm really sorry, but your name escapes me at the moment. Could you tell me again please?

這裡用escape,這個字我們熟悉的意思是「逃跑」、「溜掉」,想像一下,那個名字原來記得的,只是從記憶中溜掉,很有實境的語感。

例:The words I wanted to say escape me at the moment.(我忘記想說什麼了。)

情境二:搭電梯

和公司新人一起搭電梯,出電梯門時為了讓人留下好印象,「你先請」或「你先走」該怎麼講?

(NG)You go first.
(OK)After you.

You go first是祈使句,感覺有指揮別人行動的意思,讓人感到不舒服。更有禮貌的表達應該是After you,意思是你先請,我走在你身後。

例:Nice to see you. After you.(很開心看到你,你先請。)

情境三:酒吧

去bar喝酒時遇到漂亮女生,想請她喝杯小酒,該怎麼說?

(NG)Do you want a drink?
(OK)Can I buy you a drink?

請你喝杯酒,多半用buy這個字。或是 It's on me. 算我的好了。My treat我請客,這兩種說法。
