美國一名國安消息人士告訴美國有線電視新聞網（CNN），澳洲的特種部隊和警察十六日清晨兵分兩路，對雪梨市中心的瑞士蓮巧克力咖啡館攻堅。當時建築內至少有9人。

槍手莫尼斯穿著厚黑背心，執法人員擔心背心暗藏爆裂物。一個除爆小組清理了整棟建築，並檢查了槍手。目前不清楚是否發現爆裂物。警方除爆時，同時出動機器人協助。

澳洲人報報導，莫尼斯挾持約20名人質與警方對峙。

法新社報導，莫尼斯於警方攻堅時遭擊斃。
